Recently, 30 public relations students from San Diego State University (SDSU) embarked on a two-day exploratory trip to deepen their understanding of the PR industry. Organized by the Public Relations Student Society of America at SDSU, the excursion included visits to renowned PR agencies and interactive workshops, granting first-hand exposure to PR professionals and their operations.
On the first day, the students visited Allison Worldwide agency in Los Angeles. Veteran staff members, Scott Pansky, Lily Newman, and Abril Sosa-Pineda, emphasized the importance of relationship-building and collaboration within the industry. The second day saw them touring the famous McCann Worldgroup office where PR experts, Peter Mainstain and Maggie Cleary, highlighted the significance of staying ahead in a rapidly evolving industry.
Senior SDSU PR student, Saraí Solorzano, found the trip inspiring and educational.
SDSU PR students’ insightful industry exploration
She said, “It’s encouraging to know that there isn’t just one way to achieve your goals”. Solorzano believes the insights shared will guide her as she navigates her PR career and the positive environment inspired her to explore different facets of PR with confidence and curiosity.
On the trip’s second day, the students attended the PRSSA Western District Conference at California State University, Northridge. They participated in numerous sessions with PR experts and a competition spearheaded by Lululemon’s global public affairs director. Dorothy Leppek, a senior PR student at SDSU, felt that the conference competition honed her teamwork and lateral thinking skills.
The trip was facilitated by SDSU’s School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS), renowned for its role in the PR field. Kaye Sweetser, director of the school’s Broom Center, believes these hands-on experiences offer invaluable insights into the PR industry and potential career opportunities for the students.
